EMTRAIN PhD Workshop 2016

Call for Applications

5th EMTRAIN PhD Workshop
Innovative approaches to address unmet medical needs

Berlin, 24 – 27 April 2016

Hosted by Bayer

Background

EMTRAIN (www.emtrain.eu) is a broad public-private network funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (www.imi.europa.eu) focusing on European postgraduate education and training in the biomedical sciences. Since 2012, EMTRAIN has run annual PhD workshops, each year hosted by a different pharmaceutical company to provide an insight into their departments, facilities and labs.

Graduates of the EMTRAIN PhD Workshops form a loose network of young, industry-aware researchers that is growing every year and keeps up a fruitful exchange via social media.

Who are we looking for?

We are primarily calling for PhD students, in their second year or higher, who are enrolled in a public-private-partnership (PPP) PhD programme, or engaged otherwise in an industry collaboration, to apply for attendance. Confirmation of supervisor endorsement must be provided in the application. For a limited number of positions we also accept applications from PhD students who are not involved in a PPP programme but can demonstrate a strong motivation to engage with industry in the future.

Cost

The Workshop is free of charge for all who are admitted, including catering. All accepted participants are expected to stay at the designated workshop hotel. They must find support for travel and accommodation from their supervisors, by a travel grant or elsewhere. Applicants must specify in the application how the cost for travel and accommodation will be covered.

For a limited number of candidates who are not able to secure funding for travel and accommodation we offer scholarships up to a maximum of EUR 600 per person. Those who wish to apply for the EMTRAIN scholarship must indicate this in the application. Evidence of actual and eligible expenses must be provided to obtain reimbursement.

Workshop design

The broad spectrum of sessions and interactions will assure a diverse, interactive and inspiring learning experience including scientific lectures, interactive group work, team building exercises, oral and poster presentations by students, round table discussions, feedback sessions and time for informal networking and exchange. Full attendance is mandatory for participants.

By the end of this Workshop you will…

  • have gained a holistic understanding of the medicines development process
  • have strengthened your awareness of industry and industry-relevant topics
  • have met and openly discussed with experts from academia and pharma at eye level
  • have heard and discussed real-world stories presented by those who were involved
  • have seen a company from inside
  • have learned about newest approaches in the medicines research and development
  • have had an opportunity to discuss current hot topics
  • have networked with peers from different research areas and different countries
  • have practiced your presentation skills by presenting your research project both orally and as a poster
  • have learned about career opportunities outside academia
  • have become part of a broad scientific network

How to apply?

To apply please submit your application on phdworkshop.emtrain.eu. You are asked to provide an abstract summarising your research project, a short CV, your personal motivation letter and letters from your supervisors indicating their support and permission for you to participate and to present your work at the Workshop. Accepted abstracts will be presented orally and as a poster. Upon request we will provide support for poster printing.
